Which Witch is Which?

An introductory guide to different types of Witchcraft.

What does it mean to be a Witch?

Being a witch means that you are a practitioner of witchcraft, or the craft for short. Witchcraft has a myriad of meanings, all revolving around folk lore, anthropology, mythology, and religious contexts. When entering the craft it is important to do research. Look into your ancestry, witchcraft has a long history starting in the old world. Call upon them, you will be amazed at what they have to offer and teach you.

Being a witch also means you understand that magic is real, for it is just science that has yet to be explained. You cannot be a witch and be arrogant to science and scientific developments. It is because of witches/healers of the past that science has been able to grow. This means that as a witch we should adapt and grow with science, instead of fighting against it.

Being a witch does not make you evil. We all hold light and darkness within ourselves, and it is up to us to decided how to use those aspects of our selves.

Most importantly, we must accept that there are practices that are closed to us. With those practices come the tools that are sacred to that practice. Yes, I'm looking at y'all who use White Sage and say you 'sumdge'. Unless you have been welcomed into the practice and learned from someone in the same practice, you are appropriating. Instead of stealing from closed practices, do research on your ancestry. Look into open practices.

Can you be more than one type of Witch?

Certainly! Every Witch will tell you that they don't fit 100% in one category. When it comes to my personal journey, I incorporate a lot of practices and rituals from other types of witchcraft. I hope that this post will help you find the tools you need to walk your path your way.

Elemental Witch

This is a practitioner who works with the elements and likely the creatures who symbolize the element. Salamanders for fire, Fairies for air, Siren/Merfolk for water, Gnomes for earth. They could also be drawn to specific deities who rule over certain elements. Helios for the sun. Bridgid for fire. Aphrodite for water, and ect. Some elemental witches might focus on one element, instead of all of them.

Traditional Witch

Traditional Witches are typically witches who are also practitioners of Wicca, often known as 'the old ways'. Folklore is important to traditional witches, and will use them along with history in their craft. Sometimes they may incorporate many forms of witchcraft into their practice.

Secular Witch

This is a Witch who is non-religious. That is correct, you do not have to worship deities or gods to practice witchcraft. You can be spiritual without being a part of a religion.

Chaos Witch

This is a Witch who feels drawn to the chaos of things. The uncertainty of life, and clashing energies. Their path is usually one filled with contradictions, and strong intuition. They typically don't follow directions or traditional spells. Instead they trust their intuition to find what they need to complete a ritual or spell.

Ancestry/Folk Witch

This type of Witch practices the magic of their ancestors. They research and learn the rituals and history of their craft. Typically these Witches will also call themselves Eclectic Witches since we are all beautiful combinations of paths. Subcategories of this craft includes, Norse/Vulva, Celtic, Welsh, Hellenistic, Italian folk, Appalachian, Roman, Slovik, etc. This can also include paths that are closed. If you find that you have ancestry leading you to a closed path, reach out to the community. Just because you share ancestry with them, does not mean they have to accept and teach you.

Eclectic Witch

This is the most common type in today's modern world. Eclectic Witches pull from multiple paths. Eclectic Witches can be found with a wide range of books, covering different types of magic.

Techno Witch

I first heard this term on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This is a form of witchcraft that is still relatively new. Think of this as someone who keeps their Book of Shadows or Grimoire on their computer or tablet. They create sigils or spells using programs and applications. They may even have an online coven, if they are not a solitary witch.

Astrology Witch

These types of witches can create astrology charts that help you see when the best time to cast a spell, or find a new job. They also are likely to worship celestial deities, or feel drawn to them. They also are likely drawn to the myths behind the constellations.
